‘Nasty’ Iowa Senate race questions whether the state couldn’t have done better

The Iowa U.S. Senate race has been described as among the most insulting. Republican Joni Ernst, a state senator is opposed by Bruce Braley, a state representative. Ernst has a small edge 5 days before the election. It  has attracted more international interest, possibly because of the potential presidential candidates who have gotten involved.

Ernst is slightly ahead in the polls. A recent controversy was the decision by Ernst to not submit to questioning by the editorial board of the Des Moines Register. Braley has been dogged by gaffes. The newspaper’s  president and publisher, Rick Green, said in a statement, “This has been an incredibly nasty, competitive race where both sides have spent millions and aired tens of thousands of TV spots.”

Some believe this will be the crucial state in determining whether Republicans gain control of the Senate. It is uncertain whether a GOP victory will lead to a more productive next session, given the embarrassing gridlock due to partisan politics. Neither party has held control of the Senate for more than eight years since the early 1900’s.

As with other races that lack civility, it makes you wonder whether there weren’t better possible candidates for Senate.
